This presentation argues that educational research that employs longitudinal ethnography allows for a closer examination of educational inequities and injustices as they emerge within urban secondary schools over time and leads us toward a deeper level of understanding of the very complex social processes at work within and outside of urban schools. Drawing upon 3 years of ethnographic research within four urban, underperforming secondary schools, presenters argue that the temporal patterns of urban education require an extended and on-the-ground presence in the field.
