The Role of a Technology Framework in Orchestrating Real-Time Inquiry: SAIL Smart Space (S3)

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Second Level, Superior A

Abstract

This paper describes PLACE.neo, the culminating activity of a 12-week inquiry curriculum for grade 11 physics, in which students leverage a peer-constructed knowledge base to scaffold their solving of ill-structured Hollywood video problems. Using a design-based research approach, we introduce a smart classroom infrastructure (SAIL Smart Space - S3) and investigate its role in the orchestration of PLACE.neo. We examine two specific S3 elements (the agent architecture and teacher orchestration tablet) for alerting the teacher to opportunities for constructive interactions with students. Using a co-designed 4-point scale to evaluate groups’ completeness their problem setup, we show that the orchestrational scaffolds, which enabled the teacher to have select groups revise their work, resulted in an average increased score of 0.67.
