More Than a "Dumping Ground"? Supporting Suspended Youth in an Alternative Educational Setting

Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This paper evaluates an alternative education program for suspended students, Transitional Continuing Learning (TCL) program. TCL is a mandatory program for students suspended for 3+ days. The present study examines the process and outcomes related to academic and social success among participating 5th -12th grade students. Preliminary findings highlight racial disparities in suspension rates and suggest that initial communication between TCL coordinators and parent(s) impact the success of a student. Findings reveal complexities and challenges with meeting the needs of participating students, including referrals of very young elementary students and the suggestion that TCL has become “a dumping ground” for challenging students. Implications for academic racial disparities are discussed.
