Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore first-generation, freshmen Hispanic students’ transition to college and their perceptions of the services provided to them at their institution. Eight students participated in an individual thirty-minute, semi-structured interview. Data analysis identified several key themes from the interviews: being a family role model, support from family, appreciation for and changes to the programs provided by the Center for Academic Retention & Enhancement at Florida State University, persistence towards the college degree, and students change in study strategies from their first semester to their second semester of college. This study provides data that supports previous research and includes vital data about how we can increase the likelihood of Hispanic students academic success in college.
