Queer Voices: Visualizing LGBTQ Student Sense of Belonging and Campus Climate

Abstract

This paper seeks to illuminate how campus spaces contribute to LGBTQ college student sense of belonging, utilizing critical photovisual methods to inform campus climate at a Midsize Urban Public University. Participants illustrate a heightened sense of belonging in relation to core tenants of Strayhorn’s (2012) model for student sense of belonging. Findings provide implications for higher education practitioners and scholars, encouraging the use of alternative qualitative methods to assess campus climate in order to foster safe spaces for all students on our college campuses.
