This paper examines media’s influence on Black girls’ self-concept. This study is designed to create a measure of the trending images as characterized by media images of Black females on their self-concept. A growing consensus about the images and messages received to, for, about Black girls often portrays negative stereotypes. For the purpose of this study, the research question will be examining the general self-concept of Black girls through Black feminist thought and critical race theory lens. This preliminary study uses qualitative methodology to collect and uncover the cultural beliefs, behaviors, and self-concept of Black girls as influenced by media images. The larger implications of this study seek to contribute to the discourse of the omission of Black girls’ voices.
