As a major issue in the reconceptualization of environmental education research, the question of quality must be raised as a contested construct, subjective in nature and based on values and interests. Recently the notion of quality has been problematized as a universal, measurable by research focused on increasing awareness of context, complexity, diversity and subjectivity. We raise questions about the philosophical value of multiple perspectives and how those questions relate to the quality of research as both process and product. By implication, this presentation invites a critical look at traditional methods as a means of moving environmental education toward discussions of new approaches and emerging methods for those who are not about to stop and listen to debates about theory.
