The Role of Fundamental Motor Skills in Adolescents' Physical Activity: A Six-Year Follow-Up

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton, Floor: Second Level, Superior B

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of fundamental motor skills (FMS) in childhood on their physical activity (PA) six years later. A target sample comprised 224 children (149 girls, 75 boys; M age = 12.39 years, SD = .23) who participated in baseline measurements and returned PA questionnaires (73% of the original sample). Participants previous PA behavior, sex, and body mass index were controlled in the analysis. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that covariates explained 20% of the variance in PA questionnaire-derived metabolic equivalents, and FMS variable significantly improved the prediction power of the model(R2 change = .09). The role on FMS in PA will be discussed.
