Smart Money? Federal and Philanthropic Funding for the Common Core

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

The Common Core State Standards Initiative seeks to improve achievement and narrow achievement gaps, to improve transparency across accountability systems, and to foster efficiencies in the development and use of educational resources. Money to advance the reform has come from federal and philanthropic sources. This study surfaces seven distinct pathways along which such funding travels from government and philanthropic sources into, through, or entirely around school systems; the purposes for which money was allocated, the types of recipient organizations, and who is benefiting to date from the funding of this reform. It suggests policymakers and philanthropists experiment with other approaches to funding educational reform.
