Abstract

By using Tracy’s (2010) eight criteria of excellent qualitative research, this study examines the quality of qualitative studies in the field of middle grades education. For the purpose of the study on contemporary middle grades research, two major research publications, Middle Grades Research Journal and Research in Middle Level Education Online from 2000-2013, are critically reviewed to identify the quality. The findings indicate that, among the eight criteria, the middle grades field needs improvements on the areas of Rich Rigor, Meaningful Coherence, and Credibility. This study aims to provide the middle level community with future directions for more rigorous qualitative research designed to improve practice.
