This article portrays engaging, first-person accounts of schooling in McComb, MIssissippi from the 1960s to the present, that are supported by archival data. We include the voices of former students (many who participated in the 1961 segregated Burgland High School walkout) as well as current and former teachers and leaders, regarding the evolution of schooling in McComb, particularly for students of color. We also devote significant attention to what they perceive as the successes and challenges with connecting a social justice pedagogical orientation to a current reform effort, the Common Core State Standards, and how the school's successful Civil Rights Movement and Labor History Initiative—an enactment of social justice pedagogy—may be affected.
