This study is part of a larger project that uses an emerging methodology, Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN, Nash & Bradley, 2011) to analyze the first author’s experiences with difference, stigma, marginalization, and resilience. The first author’s experience of growing up, and living with a mentally ill father and in poverty are the focus of the inquiry. Through the review of critical incidents, the process of analysis and meaning-making, and constant interaction with relevant literature, the study will investigate the connections between these formative experiences and her later commitment to social justice in her teaching. The purpose of this study is to add to the body of literature that investigates the origins and dispositions of teachers committed to social justice.
