Information Literacy Skills: Assessing Preservice Teachers' Knowledge and Understandings

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

The need for information literacy knowledge and skills is well documented in the literature; however, research has mostly focused on K-12 students with the assumption that teachers already possess the knowledge and skills necessary to implement them in their personal lives and teach them in the classroom when in fact little is actually known. Therefore, the purpose of this descriptive statistical study was to identify and evaluate preservice teachers’ (N=183) information literacy skills as measured by the iSkills assessment. Our findings indicate that preservice teachers often struggle with information literacy skills as they become increasingly complex.
