Highlighting the design research process, this paper details the development of an instructional approach, collaborative translation, that is used to help emerging bilingual students use their heritage language. This instructional approach creates multilingual spaces where students are encouraged to use and develop their heritage language skills in literature discussions. Findings focus on the design research process and the iterations made to the instructional strategy.
