Abstract

The (Un) Making of the Teacher refers to a Canadian SSHRC-funded research study that explores a small group of teacher candidates’ conceptions and/or misconceptions of what it means to “teach” as they progress through a one-year pre-service teacher education program. The study uses a case study, documentary filmmaking approach, and although it serves as the source from which biographical dilemmas arise, the content and details of the lives studied are not the focus of this paper. This paper explores the data collection and analysis issues embedded in the act of describing the lives and experiences of individuals when using documentary filmmaking as a research process and product.
