In this paper I take up the gap between the critical possibilities of action research and the enactment of it in practice as a technical endeavor. I focus on action research pedagogy as praxis, asking questions about teaching emancipatory action research in these technical times. I use three commonplaces of teaching to explore and explain emerging tensions: (1) inquiry and data; (2) learners, equity, and identities of difference; and (3) teachers and school leaders as agents of change.
