Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Gold Level, Atlanta

Abstract

This paper traces the pedagogical influences of Cato Hanrath Proost, a disciple of Maria Montessori at the Association Montessori International in the Netherlands, who taught in the U. S., and Mexico imparting Montessori methods to future teachers and developing a parent training program until 2007. Using testimonials from 35 teachers and leaders in Mexico and the U.S., gathered over the past 4 years by the researcher via email, face to face and skype interviews, Cato’s pedagogical influences are made known. Content analysis of her critical thinking reflected in El Nino de Mañana (Tomorrow’s Child) and Encuentro (Encounter) is conducted and linked to Paulo Freire’s pedagogy. Reflections by her family, round off the presentation of this remarkable, yet unsung Montessori innovator.
