Abstract

We share part of ourselves when we tell a story (Denning, 2005). Stories can demonstrate our vulnerability, confirm our willingness to engage, and help clarify our purpose (Brown, 2012). The stories we choose to share transmit values, and reflect who we are, where we are going and ultimately, what we want to become. Stories have the potential to help people connect, develop genuine understanding and unite around common purposes (Fisher, 1984). This paper examines the impact and effectiveness of assigning, creating and sharing stories in three graduate classes focused on educational leadership and school improvement. The researchers investigate how this strategy may help emerging educational leaders develop the awareness, skills and confidence to apply their learning in additional contexts.
