This research project utilizes a formative evaluation process to help researchers understand the intersections of school safety, discipline, and school climate as they relate to race and class. Practically, the research helped determine what works in terms of meeting the dual goal of improving school climate and reducing racial discipline and academic disparities in a public high school in a Midwestern city. The purpose of this research project is to document the factors impacting school climate and student behavior leading to reducing unintended consequences of racial disparities in punishment and overuse of harsh disciplinary practices.
