Discriminating Chicken: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Institutional Responses to the Chick-fil-A Debacle

Abstract

Using Critical Discourse Analysis, this paper analyzes institutional responses to a controversy involving the restaurant chain Chick-Fil-A. In August 2012 many campuses felt pressure to respond to campus constituent demands for the restaurants removal based on the company's position on marriage equality. As campuses continue to focus their efforts on diversity and inclusion, how do these efforts pair with campus action? Findings indicate campuses were required to balance political interests with diversity commitments.
