Much research points to the importance of the principal in guiding school reform and improving student outcomes. However, we still do not entirely understand the complex ways in which school leaders influence instruction and learning. This paper uses qualitative data collected as part of a mixed-methods research study funded by a grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) to describe the mechanisms through which school leaders influence instruction and student learning. Our findings indicate that successful school leaders impact student learning through creating a positive school environment; working with teachers to set ambitious goals for students; monitoring student behaviors and progress towards the goals; and structuring the school environment in ways that ensure student and teacher success.
