Investigating Teacher Change Agency Through the Use of Equity Audits

Abstract

Many educators are ill-equipped to notice and address inequities that exist in their schools. The equity audit is a tool with the potential to help identify disparities, uncover the causes, and take action to remedy them. This paper reports findings from a study of in-service teachers (n=40) who conducted equity audits as a course assignment in their Master’s degree programs. The authors found that equity audits increased teachers’ awareness of school-based more than classroom-based disparities, increased confidence and interest in using data to advocate for students, and increased feelings of empowerment to be agents of change in their schools.
