Expanding Communities of Practice: Collaboration and Mentoring in Educational Leadership and Teacher Education

Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Lobby Level, Columbus AB

Abstract

This paper examines a collaborative project conducted across three education departments in a racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse urban public university. The collaboration was designed to enrich the field experiences of elementary and secondary student teachers and educational leadership candidates in connection to two locally-mandated assessment and/or evaluation tools: SCALE’s edTPA and the Danielson framework. In this paper, we document the collaborative pilot project, analyze qualitative and quantitative data, and discuss implications for curriculum and pedagogy. We argue for the expansion of communities of practice (Lave & Wenger, 1991) in teacher education and educational leadership, as well as the need for critical reflection regarding the impact of these frameworks on educators’ enactments of equity and excellence across educational contexts.
