Impacts of Asset-Based Strategies on Student Engagement at a High-Needs Elementary School

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott, Floor: Fifth Level, Scottsdale

Abstract

This presentation will share results from a partnership between the Capstone Institute at Howard University and an elementary school in a high needs neighborhood in the mid-Atlantic region. The main challenge at the school and district was disproportionality; a disproportionate representation or overrepresentation of African-American boys and students in special education programs in office referrals and suspensions. Needs gleaned from a comprehensive needs assessment were practical strategies for teachers to use to increase student engagement and hence lower behavior problems. Teachers at the school were trained on the Capstone Model of School Enhancement which uses evidence-based strategies proven to increase student engagement. The model is based on the Talent Development Model of school reform and employs asset-based strategies to build on students’ strengths and talents in order to increase their engagement in instruction. While receiving on-going, year-long professional development, the teachers were observed multiple times throughout the school year. Results showed statistically significant growth in quality teacher-student relationships, use of cultural resources in instruction, and overall student engagement from baseline observations to end-of-year observations.
