Using Duoethnography to Explore Spaces of Discomfort: A Three-Year Conversation Between a Young Woman Labeled With Intellectual Disability and a University Professor

Abstract

The original intention of this research was to pilot participatory video (White, 2003) as a form of narrative inquiry, with a young woman labeled with intellectual disability. This research originally intended to only examine the written and video narratives constructed by a young woman labeled with intellectual disability, over a three-year period. However, as the research evolved—or rather, as the conversations between the professor and young woman continued-- the use of duoethnography (Norris, 2008) seemed to more accurately reflect the dialogic and reflexive process occurring between two women. This paper attempts to capture the redefining of the researcher and the researched (Meerwald, 2013), as well as the intersectional interplay of constructs such as disability, gender, ethnicity, religion, and economic class.
