Drawing on the works of critical GIS scholars and critical theorists in education, this study analyzes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) curriculum through a critical complexivist lens in order to explore and discuss the degree to which curriculum both reinforces and disrupts hegemonic views of knowledge production. Through a more critical lens, curriculum using GIS can be explored for the ways in which it both opens and closes democratic opportunities both in real life and in the classroom. Educators can be more richly informed of the potentialities of GIS as a site of socio-political transformation.
