Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Green Level, Crystal B

Abstract

This paper describes use of sacred and secular stories, integrated into Common Core curricula and a school-wide program, to foster a sense of civility and peace in a rural elementary school. Wisdom Thinkers Network, a not-for-profit organization headed by Ralph Singh, was selected to work with teachers and students at Cleveland Elementary School in Central Square, NY. Over five years, the curricular materials developed by the organizations, Stories To Light Our Way, helped develop a more compassionate, inclusive, and ethical culture. The result was a school that was named a national Blue Ribbon School in 2010 by the U.S. Department of Education. This paper describes perceptions of parents, teachers and students regarding the beneficial results and outgrowths of the program
