This study examines a college ESL student’s remediation of argumentative essays from a written paper to a multimodal digital video. It looks at what kinds of modal changes they made, what contextual factors shaped their remediation, and how the remediated texts shaped their rhetorical choices and authorial stances. Drawing on the concepts of design and remediation, argumentative papers, multimedia videos, interview data, and observation notes were analyzed for modal changes, rhetorical choices and styles, and reconstructed authorial stances. The data analysis shows that the choice and arrangement of modal resources of the remediated text were shaped by student’s prior experiences with medium, perceptions of audiences, and identities that the student author wanted to construct with the audiences.
