Inside, Outside, Side by Side: Resisting Binary Perspectives of Literacy in/out of School

Abstract

The goal of this study is to explore the intersections and gaps between two broad areas of literacy research: that of out-of-school and in-school literacy research. Hull and Schultz’s Out of School (2002) documented how students were engaging in complex literacy practices outside of school but were still disconnected from literacy within school. There has been an explosion of out-of-school literacy research, but we contend that literacy researchers are studying youth literacy practices in parallel contexts. While there is a great deal of discussion of what should go on in classrooms, there needs to be greater focus on understanding how literacy is being defined differently in contexts to help students be successful.
