A relatively new approach to teacher preparation known as teaching residency programs (TRPs) aims to improve student achievement and teacher retention in high-need schools by preparing teachers through an intensive yearlong residency guided by a classroom mentor and integrated coursework leading to a master’s degree. The federal government helped fund this residency model by awarding Teacher Quality Partnership grants to support 30 TRPs. Using surveys, interviews, and administrative data, this descriptive study of these grant-supported TRPs explains how the TRPs operate; describes the characteristics of program staff and participants; and compares the characteristics, experiences, and retention of novice teachers from these programs with those from other programs.
