The Social Foundations of Education (SFE) has been increasing marginalized in the landscape of teacher preparation programs. It has been criticized by both students and academics alike for a perceived lack of value, functionality, and relevance in modern teaching. In a culture where teacher preparation programs are churning out skilled “methodists” who are able to master the technicalities of teaching but have little capacity to critically inquire about the nature of teaching, one SFE program has sought reimagine and reestablish itself as an essential component to teacher preparation. This paper offers examples of service-based programs that seek to 1) illustrate the power of collaboration and partnerships, 2) make connections between theory and practice, and 3) address the value question of SFE.
