A Meta-Analysis: The Effect of Video Games in Math on Student Achievement

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This study synthesized the studies regarding math learning games to answer three research questions: (1) effects of using math-learning games on achievement (2) effects of using math-learning games by moderators (3) comparison of outcomes between math learning game and traditional learning intervention. For the purpose, the eight databases were used for exploratory search between 2005 and 2014 and a total of 27 effect sizes were calculated from 17 selected studies. For combining the effect sizes, a weighted mean effect size (d) was computed. The result of homogeneity test showed that the effect sizes are heterogeneous (Qstats= 67.72, df=26). Finally, the average effect size was small to medium (d=.20, sed=.06). The result from moderator analyses will be investigated in the future.
