What we know about black males and the ways in which they perform their gender is scant across various literatures. There is also a vast gulf in literature about diverse performances of black masculinities. In this paper we address how black males are socially positioned and treated in educational and community spaces and how they construct as well as perform their black masculinities. This study is an attempt to better understand the complexity of black masculinity and how black boys and college students navigate issues of surveillance, with the hopes of providing a way out of the crisis literature surrounding black males in education.
