The Student as Artist

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

In contrast to the prevailing view of the student as scientist, this work presents a pedagogical model built on the conception of the student as artist. In this view, learning is connected to the self, involves risk and requires courage. Qualitative inquiry into student experience of pedagogy built on this model and enacted in a college ceramics course reveals the transformative experience of discovering the self as a source of knowledge, and the courage required for such discovery and transformation. In keeping with a perspective that meaning-making in all academic disciplines connects with life’s big questions, we suggest consideration of this model for other learning situations beyond the art studio.
