The Difference One Student Makes! The Impact of Tutoring on Perspectives and Practices of Teachers

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

A complex challenge of teaching practice involves addressing the needs of struggling learners. The purpose of this research was to examine the influences of extended, supervised tutoring on the perspectives and practices of classroom teachers. Teachers in a reading graduate program tutored struggling students using an interactive approach advocated by Lipson & Wixson (2013). A formative design was used and tutoring, seminar, and interview data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis methods. The results indicate that teachers acquired an in depth understanding of reading development, motivational principles, effective reading assessment techniques, using assessment to guide instruction in connected learning, deeper conceptual understanding of RTI, and a diagnostic and clinical practice perspective. Implications for classroom practice and teacher development are discussed.
