Student Attitudes Toward Technology-Mediated Advising Systems: Variability in Student Preferences for Online and In-Person Advising

Abstract

This mixed methods study investigates how students’ attitudes towards technology-mediated advising systems vary depending on who they are and the type of advising they seek online. Our preliminary findings indicate that attitudes vary depending on the type of student and the advising function. These findings add nuance to the presently polarized discussion about technology in higher education and suggest that optimizing technology in this space may mean utilizing computer-mediated advising for some students in some contexts.
