Are Internal Validity and Systemic Replication Conflicting Perspectives? Implications for Research-Based Knowledge for Decision Makers

Abstract

Explored are implications for insuring that research knowledge is developed in a manner that makes it readily usable by educational consumers. Distinguished are the implications from conflicting perspectives in educational research that emphasize study-specific internal validity (Campbell & Stanley, 1963) on one hand with alternative views that place greater emphasis on multi-study systemic replication (Sidman, 1960) on the other. Following a reconciliation of these two research perspectives, both are fit within the dynamics of a multiple baseline research design approach, with an eye toward broadening the scope of research-based knowledge usable by educational decisionmakers.
