Surprisingly, there is little agreement on the association between online learning in community colleges and a range of student outcomes.While some studies (e.g., Coates et al, 2004; Xu & Jaggers, 2013) report community college students who enroll in online courses are more likely to dropout, and perform poorly, others (e.g., Shea, 2014) have found community college students who take online courses are actually more likely to persist and succeed (i.e., earn a certificate or degree). Therefore, the present study utilizes multilevel modeling to investigate the impact of enrollment in fully online coursework on four community college student outcomes: transfer, certificate, and AA and BA degree attainment.
