Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This paper is an assessment of Nigerian government’s implementation of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) program and its impact on the access of children to quality education. A qualitative research method was employed, using documents analysis from Nigerian government sources and international development organizations (i.e. World Bank, UNESCO etc.).
Findings reveal that access to education by millions of Nigerian children remains hindered due to lack of political will, bad planning, poor infrastructure, failure to engage communities, irregular payment of teachers’ salaries, etc. Based on these findings, suggestions and recommendations on sustaining the gains of the UBE program and overcoming hindrances of access to quality education were made.
