Sat, April 18, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Curriculum-Embedded Performance Assessment (CEPA) is an important approach to assessing students’ learning achievement, which is highly advocated by the New Curriculum Reform in K-12 education area. A sample of 335 seventh-grade students participated in the study voluntarily. Using a one-year longitudinal experimental design, this study explored the effect of CEPA on students’ problem solving in the Mathematics. Results indicated that this assessment approach promoted students’ problem solving ability significantly, and the promoting effect increased as the experiment progressing, which was also influenced by students’ original achievement abilities. Further analysis on participants’ oral reporting materials showed that CEPA’s promoting effect demonstrated in the aspects such as problems understanding, meta-cognition and problem solving strategies, etc.
