This paper offers a framework for constructing text sets for supporting students’ historical inquiry in history classrooms. While prepackaged and commercially available text sets have become widely available, we argue that both teachers and students benefit from the process of teachers developing their own text sets for instruction. Through the work of a multi-institutional design-based research project and multiple design iterations, this framework emerged from analyses of data collected across multiple years in history classrooms. The framework makes particular parts of this dynamic process explicit in order to provide teachers with a tool to assist in developing effective text sets in their own classroom, as well as a tool for researchers and teacher educators to support teachers in this process.
