The Experience and Perspective of a 17-Year-Old Black Male College Sophomore in a Mentoring Program Who Aspires to Earn a Ph.D.

Abstract

President Barack Obama has called for men to step up and provide mentorship to males and young men of color through his My Brother's Keeper Initiative. There is little research of Black males in mentoring programs. Based on a mixed methods longitudinal study, this presentation will provide a overview of the larger study with emphasis placed on a 17 year old Black male sophomore who aspires to pursue a Ph.D. to better understand how mentoring impacts his life and academic trajectory.
