Supervisors' Evaluations of Schools Located in Districts Resided in by Families From Poor Households or Immigrants

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, Vevey 1&2

Abstract

This study examined how population movements impact on schools located in areas subjected to high levels of in- and/or out-migration according to primary school supervisors (N=150). A cross-sectional survey was implemented with supervisors to identify the most pressing problems confronting these schools as well as possible actions by various stakeholders that could alleviate them. Findings show that these schools serve mostly children from poor households and are faced with challenges including inadequate school resources and physical facilities; ineffective and untimely curriculum implementation; recruitment of relatively inexperienced and less-qualified educational staff; high turnover rates; and low levels of parental involvement.
