Facing the New Challenges to Educational Leadership in China: Rising Racism, Institutional Barriers, and Adaptive Strategies

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

While China has seldom encountered racism in the past, the process of globalization in recent years rapidly brings many racial challenges and a significant trend of racism into Chinese society and the field of education, calling for effective school reforms targeting a race-blind and multicultural learning environment. However, the centralized educational system in China has formed multiple institutional barriers for such anti-racism school reforms. Though some school leaders have adopted various leadership strategies to bypass or overcome those barriers, anti-racism policies and laws are still highly needed to create truly inclusive school environments and a multicultural society in China.
