The purpose of this study was to explore developmental aspects of collective classroom efficacy for students in diverse urban classrooms. The study was conducted using a cross case analysis illustrating interactions of classroom participants from three different elementary settings. Using discourse analysis and event mapping, we identified cornerstones of collective classroom efficacy that included both social and academic confidence established with social and academic responsibility. We used a sociocultural framework to highlight the developmental aspect of collective efficacy. We made visible in what ways classroom teachers can foster performance capability for all students through interactive meaning negotiation. We also provide a perspective that teachers and researchers can use to examine the local and historical practices that shape collective classroom efficacy.
