Abstract

Getting a second chance at fulfilling high school requirements in mathematics in Israel has given an opportunity to more students to obtain a higher level of mathematics attainment. To help students prepare for the resit exam of the mathematics Bagrut (Israeli matriculation) of 2013, the Center for Educational Technology established a virtual review session using Facebook. Six hundred-fourteen students and 16 teachers participated. We use the lens of complexity theory to show how conditions that support the emergence of mathematical concepts come into play through the use of Facebook in a preparatory course in mathematics. We recommend the use of vocabulary that complexity theory offers to better understand learning mathematics through social networks.
