Overcoming Career Advancement Barriers Through Education and Mentorship: Hispanics in the Construction Industry

Fri, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

As the demographic makeup of the United States shifts the demographics of the construction industry are changing as well. However, as the proportion of Hispanics living and working in the U.S. has increased, the proportion of those in management roles in the construction industry has remained largely unchanged with the vast majority of the increase in Hispanic workers in manual labor or other non-management roles. In an effort to address this demographic imbalance in the construction industry, this study seeks to identify how barriers to advancement are perceived by Hispanic construction workers, what they perceive the causes to be, and what can be done to overcome them.
