Toward Justice in the Education of Youth With Behavioral/Emotional Disorders

Abstract

The school experiences of many youth who are considered to have severe behavioral and emotional disorders have been one of marginalization. Prevailing practices that include measures of control and surveillance raise ethical issues even when carried out with the best of intentions. Articulating the structures commonly recognized as making up the educational experiences of these students and examining the assumptions and presuppositions that frame their experiences, is the first step toward analyzing and addressing issues of justice and equality.
