The Impact of Prolonged ESL Training on In-Service Teachers, Their Districts, and Their Students

Abstract

The state of Illinois has experienced not only continued growth in the number of immigrant families but also a change in where they live, with more migration to suburbs. With shifting populations, many school districts have higher proportions of English Language Learners (ELLs). With the influx of ELLs, districts can lack enough teachers with knowledge of ESL and bilingual techniques. This research investigates the results of a university-district partnership program that trains in-service teachers in ESL methods, allowing them to secure ESL endorsements to their licenses. It studies the program’s impact on the teachers, their districts, and the children they teach.
