Abstract

In this paper, we describe the challenges we have faced in designing and executing a field study of data use, instructional planning, and teaching practice in four elementary schools serving diverse, disadvantaged populations. We analyze the intertwined epistemological, ethical, and strategic methodological considerations we have addressed while conducting this qualitative research in highly charged settings in order to generate knowledge that is both locally useful and more broadly informative.
